Between July 9 and August 13 an ad from department store Kohl’s has scored the highest grade among a group of 30 new TV spots, according to ad effectiveness tracker Ace Metrix.

Kohl’s has two ads in Ace’s top 10, one of which is “Vote for your school”, in which the marketer promoted a tie-in contest with social marketing site Facebook. The ad garnered an overall Ace score of 614 (out of a possible 950).

The average Ace Score for the 30 back-to-school ads was 481. By comparison, the average Ace score for all national advertising is 532.

Target was the most prolific back-to-school advertiser, accounting for 13 of the 30 new ads tracked by Ace, including 10 that rounded out the list and ranked 21 through 30. And like Kohl’s top ranked ad, Target’s 30th-ranked effort included a tie-in with Facebook.

Many CEO specialists said that the success of Kohl’s camping is connected with Facebook tie-in. However, Peter Daboll, CEO at Ace Metrix said, “Just having a Facebook tie-in does not guarantee success with consumers.”

Peter said that the main success of Kohl’s is “do-good” approach to its Facebook camping where the retailer awarded $500,000 cash prizes to the highest vote-getting schools at a time when public education budgets are under pressure.

Ace’s top-10 back-to school ads are Kohl’s “Vote for Your School,” with a score of 614; Best Buy’s “Mom and Son Disagree,” 574; Target’s “Small Space Solutions,” 570; Staples’ “Back-to-School List,” 566; Office Max “Child as Astronaut,” 551; Office Depot’s “Sony Notebooks,” 535; JC Penny’s “Students Pose,” 532; Kohl’s “Big Weekend Sale,” 529; Macy’s “Style on Your Terms,” 524; WalMart’s “Lightning Bugs,” 524.

Google to allow phone calls from Gmail

Google Inc announced that now users of Gmail can call telephones directly from their email. Of course, this will result in direct completion with Web calling service Skype and more traditional operators such as AT&T Inc and Verizon Communications.

Starting from August 26 Google will allow calls to home phones and mobile phones directly from Gmail for the first time. Up to now Google offered only computer-to-computer voice and video chat services.

US and Canadian Gmail users can make free calls for the rest of this year and other countries’ users would charge low rates for their calls. For example, the calls to Britain, France, Germany, China and Japan would be as low as 2 cents per minute.

This new Google service would become a bigger competitive threat to services like Skype rather than to usual phone companies. This is because such phone companies have already cut their call prices in recent years because of stiff competition.

Google said making a call through its service works like a normal phone in that a user could click on the “call phone” option in their chat buddy list in Gmail and type in the number or enter a contact’s name. Calls that cost money will be charged from an online account that users can top up with a credit card, Google said.

Three teens who were on a 69-name hit list posted on Facebook have been killed in the past 10 days in a southwestern Colombian town.

Now Colombian police are investigating the killings of three youths whose names appeared on hitlists published on the social networking site Facebook. Police say they do not know who posted the list or why the names are on it.

On August 17 a 69-name hit list appeared on Facebook, carrying name of people from Puerto Asis, Colombia. The post warned that those listed had three days to leave the town – or they will be killed.

Diego Ferney Jaramillo, 16, and Eibart Alejandro Ruiz Munoz, 17, were shot dead as they were driving along a road on the outskirts of Puerto Asis in Putumayo province on their motorcycle. The names of the two dead teenagers had been on the list. The authorities at first thought they were dealing with a hoax. But the killing of a third listed teenager, Norbey Alexander Vargas, on August 20 prompted officials to take the threats seriously.

Another list was published on Facebook on August 23, this time naming 31 local girls.

Police officials have not yet commented on who may be behind the treats or why the youths had been targeted.
